Education through Nature.

Sonoma Earth School was founded by husband and wife team, Tim and Leila Allen, out of a deep commitment to children, education, and the natural world. Inspired by the nature-based education movement, their own children’s learning needs, and their combined decades of experience as educators, they envisioned a new kind of school—one that moves education forward by bringing it back to its roots.

The Earth is calling for a different approach to education. Today, the disconnection between humans and nature is contributing to both environmental harm and declining child development. At Sonoma Earth School, we restore this vital relationship. Students develop a lasting bond with the natural world, learning through reverence, care, and hands-on experiences that plant essential seeds for the future.

Modern education often struggles to meet the diverse needs of today’s learners. Traditional models—teaching large groups of same-age students with standardized methods—leave many children behind. Sonoma Earth School offers a small, mixed-age learning community where each student’s challenges and successes are individualized. In this setting, students build authentic confidence through their personal growth, not comparison to standardized benchmarks.

In a time when education is increasingly virtual and fragmented, students risk gaining facts while losing meaning. At Sonoma Earth School, students find purpose and resilience through strong relationships with caring mentors and a deep connection to nature. By integrating academics into real-world, nature-based experiences, we create the foundation for lifelong learning, helping every child discover their unique path.
